Statements from John King and Michelle Siri on Senate’s Failure to Protect Abortion Rights

5/11/2022 | John B. King, Michelle Siri

“It is disgraceful that the Senate was unable to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act thanks to the cowardice of Senate Republicans and West Virginia “Democrat”, Sen. Joe Manchin, who continues to fail to protect the best interests of the people he represents. This bill’s failure has huge repercussions if the Supreme Court goes through with overturning the protections enshrined in Roe. It will now be on the states to guarantee abortion care for all who need it, and pregnant people seeking abortions in states with governors and legislatures that have already stripped or are working to strip away abortion rights will face enormous obstacles to getting the care they need. As your governor, I will do everything in my power to protect the right to reproductive care. I’m proud to have Michelle Siri on my team because she brings decades of experience advocating for reproductive rights – and together we will fight to make sure Marylanders have access to reproductive care including abortion, because abortion is health care and health care is a human right. We also know that this bill’s failure means that people living in states near Maryland that do not have abortion protections will be coming to us to find care – including from West Virginia, where Sen. Manchin just put lives in jeopardy with his vote. That’s why as your governor I will act to implement the recently passed Abortion Care Access Act, and protect and expand a pregnant person’s right to an abortion.” said John King.

“I got into this race because I’ve always believed that we can never take our rights for granted. Unfortunately, the awful result of today’s vote in the Senate is just more evidence of that. The King-Siri administration will not rest until the right to abortion care is fully protected in Maryland.” said Michelle Siri.
