A lifelong educator, John B. King Jr. knows firsthand the power of public education and the important role educators play in creating a more just and prosperous future. John’s own life was saved by public school educators after both of his parents passed away by the time he was twelve. Like many kids who suffer trauma, John struggled as a teenager and got into so much trouble that he was actually kicked out of high school. It was public school educators that saved his life, gave him a second chance, and inspired him to become an educator himself. John has spent his entire career fighting for a more just and equitable future, from working as an educator himself to serving as the first Afro-Latino Secretary of Education under President Obama.

As Secretary of Education under President Obama, the President of the Education Trust, and the Founder of Strong Future Maryland, John has worked with leaders both in Annapolis and across the country to help advance bold, progressive legislation that invests in our public schools, protects workers, and safeguards our environment.
